For most of the year, skunks tend to stay out of sight and out of mind. But lately you may have noticed an uptick in that incredibly distinct odor that lets you know those little black and white fur balls are nearby.
While skunks have excellent senses of smell and hearing, their eyesight is rather poor. When feeling threatened, spraying musk is often their last resort- a typical reaction when approached by any curious pooch.
Here’s a quick and easy recipe to de-skunk your dog:
- 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap
- rubber gloves (not needed but we recommend them!)
- Check your dog’s eyes to make sure they aren’t red or irritated. If they are, flush with cool water only.
- Mix peroxide, baking soda and soap; then thoroughly rub the mixture into Fido’s fur being careful to not get any in his eyes.
- Leave for five minutes before rinsing the mixture off and then wash your dog with pet shampoo.
Repeat the process as needed if the scent remains.
Once you’ve got the skunk scent out of your dog, now it’s time to tackle the house. The longer the odor stays, the more difficult it will be to remove because of its ability to absorb into porous materials like carpets, drapes and upholstery.
